The “casa de oitão” typology prints the primordial image of the project. The element, here, is used in duplicity and denotes the volumetric bipartition of the building, interconnecting two independent housing units: the main house and the Flat for temporary tenants.
The concept of a terraced room solves the issue of the smallness of the lot before the program. The desire, then, to have a balcony was absorbed by the ambiguous function of a balcony-room, occupying a single space.
The lattice, also in the shape of an oitão, better known as muxarabi, due to its Moorish origin, protects the master suite against the incidence of the setting sun on this façade. Here, the element, historically executed in wooden truss, is revisited with new metallic clothing, in perforated sheets and painted in turquoise blue.
The ventilation gap is an important element in the microclimatic adjustment of the house, capturing the prevailing winds, coming from the east side, and distributing it throughout the internal spaces. Air circulation is also reinforced by convection, since the oitton façade, which is to the west, drives the heat exchange by negative pressure. In other words, cross ventilation is guaranteed and the house stays cool, even during the hottest times of day.
The 130 m² corner lot is located near the Igreja da Piedade, in the city of Itaparica. The surrounding urban landscape, in addition to the striking presence of the church, in neo-Gothic style, dating from the 19th century, is composed by the Sobrado Monsenhor Flaviano, listed by IPHAN and today known as Solar do Rei, which has characteristics of the 18th century, having hosted figures distinguished in the history of Brazil, such as Dom João VI and his son and grandson Dom Pedro I and Dom Pedro II, in different opportunities. Nice vernacular townhouses complete the image of the place, with countryside and beachside atmosphere.
